Windmill Palm

(Trachycarpus Fortunei)

Windmill palm is known as being one of the hardiest palms, capable of withstanding a freeze with little damage. In its native habitat it even survives a light winter snow cover.  It has a unique trunk and with its spiral top it can be an interesting palm to add to your collection. The Windmill Palm is a single trunk palm with fan-shaped fronds. When the Windmill Palm is a young palm it is usually covered with old woody leaf bases, petiole bases, and the dark brown fibers that give a hairy appearance. As the palm ages and weathers, the leaf bases shed along with the brown fibers leaving a slender, distinctly ringed stem. The Windmill adapts to a range of soils, including slightly calcareous ones, and it flourishes in full sun except in tropical hot climates. The Windmill grows best in the sub-tropical climate.
