Dwarf palmetto

(Sabal minor)

Dwarf palmetto makes an interesting specimen plant in partial shade where few other palms can be grown. This widely cultivated species is native to the southeastern United States. It is a small palm with an underground single trunk and large, divided fan type fronds. Preferring tropical to temperate climates and high light, it tolerates some frost and dry periods once established. This palm is extremely hardy to cold and is one species that is a true water lover and one that relishes partial shade. It prefers fertile, moist soil whether acidic or calcareous. This species is  beautiful as any purely tropical palm when used as a giant ground cover under canopy.
